A year in the life of Action - March
45% of blind and partially sighted people live alone.
Greater Manchester
Sheila is 51 and registered blind after suffering her second stroke. When she first met Lee and Peter at Action, she was incredibly nervous, having just come out of a violent relationship.
Sheila was living in a women's refuge that was frequently targeted by gangs and where residents demanded money and sold drugs. She was in a state of total despair, but within a week, Lee managed to secure her accommodation in Manchester city centre.
The Action Team also supported many other aspects of Sheila's life, including helping her to find a job. They then worked with her prospective employer who had initial concerns about hiring Sheila due to a lack of visual awareness training.
The future is looking much brighter for Sheila. 'I'm a fighter and won’t be beaten by anything.'
Action can help you live as independently as possible, in the home of your choice. To find out more, please contact your local Action for Blind People Team .
'There’s so much help and support available. Action really has had a great impact on my life.'
