Accessibility
To make our website easy to use we've designed it to meet the highest levels of accessibility according to the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) guidelines and tested it with a large range of visually impaired people.
User friendly design
We have designed our website by involving visually impaired people at every stage of the design process. We wanted to find out what works best for you and to ensure our site was accessible to all. As a result of this, in addition to meeting Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) we have also created our own guidelines, which include:
- Accessibility tabs so you can choose how to view the site
- Using descriptive hyperlink text.
- No use of frames, which are difficult for special browsers to display.
- Javascript can be turned off and the site is still fully functional; all Javascript is used in the spirit of progressive enhancements.
- Using an easier to read non-serif font type, size and colour in default size 14.
- Using an easy-to-see web colour scheme.
We have listened to what visually impaired people have told us and have made sure that our site has useful content that is laid out in an easy-to-navigate way to cater for all our users. To find out more about how we have involved visually impaired people in site development or how you can be involved in future developments, please read our article on Accessibility and Usability .
Navigating the site
To navigate through this site, please use the top bar menu to choose a section and then the subsequent menus at the top of each page. Your screen reader will read the menu to you and provide access to the tools on this page.
Additional Accessibility tools
The test tabs on the left of the site allow you to customise the Action for Blind People website to suit your preferences. You can choose between yellow text on a black background, black text on a white background or to just increase the font size used on the site by clicking on the tabs. However, if you would prefer, you can find out more about Changing your browser settings .
Text only site
We have designed the site to be fully inclusive and therefore we hope you should not need to use a separate text only site. However, if you would rather use a text only site, you can see a text only version by following this link: View the text only version here .
Accessible PDF Documents
We provide all our documents in text only options so that they can be easily read with assistive technology. We also provide our publications in PDF format. To read PDF documents you will need Adobe reader software. A link to download Adobe reader is available on each page that contains a PDF, or you can use the following link: Download Adobe Acrobat .
All our PDFs are currently made using Adobe 8 software and tagged so that they have more accessibility features. You can use the accessibility tools provided by Adobe to read this PDF content. To find out more about these tools, please use this link: Adobe Accessibility Resource Centre
Tables, forms and JavaScript
This website has been designed using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). All WAI guidelines have been followed to ensure tables and forms are accessible and the site is fully functional with JavaScript turned off.

The W3 accessibility guidelines explain the reasons behind each guideline.
