Self employment success
Having a job with a decent salary gives visually impaired people control of their lives, so that they don’t just have to accept what other people decide is best for them.
Action for Blind People leads the employment field for blind and partially sighted people. With two out of three visually impaired people of working age unemployed, our services are much in demand. Whether it's finding a job or holding onto one, or setting up your own business, our Employment teams provide expert support and advice.
It's all about dedication, self belief and a little help from Action
One of our success stories, John Charles, experienced sight loss as a double blow, losing both his sight and his independence at the age of 23. Despite eight months in hospital and 11 operations, including brain surgery, the cause of John’s present eye condition remains unknown. "I had to be strong. I found that when my sight went, close friends distanced themselves from me. So I had to believe in myself, at all costs."
With financial and practical support from Action for Blind People, John established catering business Catering2Order which has gone from strength to strength. Despite strong competition, Catering2Order was awarded a contract by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to provide catering services to the Olympic construction site in east London.
There is little that John is afraid of after what he has gone through. He has no regrets. "If it had not happened I might not be where I am today. Life deals you a hand, so play it the best of your ability."
