Conformance to guidelines

This website has been built in line with the WCAG 2.0 and aims to achieve Priority 2 / Double A whenever possible. As the WCAG are guidelines, what is of equal importance to us is how real people use our website. As the internet is constantly evolving and the way that different browsers, technologies and devices may interpret and display our website, we have built this website to adhere to web standards and best practices, but not for specific user agents or devices. We also use common sense.

Feedback

We like to hear from people about the accessibility of our website and if you would like to tell us about your experience or make any suggestions as to how we could improve it, please contact Action For Blind People's Digital team.

Accessibility statement

Considering people’s needs

We have considered the needs of people with a wide range of abilities and from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and have given particular consideration to people with impairments which impact on the way they use the internet, whether that be through the use of specialised or assistive technologies or through adjustments made to mainstream technologies.

Using our website

Although our website is quite straightforward, we have included some information to ensure that everyone gets the most out of the experience.

The website was built using what is called “progressive enhancement” which means that everyone using technology that is meant to interact with it can use the website to their full enjoyment without missing out.

In practice this means that:

  • Without CSS, the content of each page is still readable.
  • With JavaScript off, some aspects of how the website works behave somewhat differently than when it is on, but all aspects of the website will remain accessible.
  • Most of the text on this website can be increased or decreased in size using built-in browser tools. However, we have also provided an accessibility widget that serves this purpose and more.

Browsers and operating systems
This website operates on a wide range of browsers and operating systems and has been tested specifically against:

Windows

  • Firefox 30+
  • Internet Explorer 8+
  • Chrome 40+

Macintosh

  • Firefox 30+
  • Safari 5+

Important notice regarding Internet Explorer 10

We have implemented WAI-ARIA in this version of the site. WAI-ARIA, the Accessible Rich Internet Applications Suite, defines a way to make Web content and Web applications more accessible to people with disabilities.

However, Internet Explorer 10 only offers partial support for ARIA so there are some areas of the site that are more difficult to use for screenreader users also using IE 10 as their browser. Unfortunately this is beyond our control and we would strongly recommend you upgrade to the latest version of your web browser. Better still, try an alternative more modern browser such as Chrome or Firefox.
